I like how the one in the back is all, "Eff you, man. You're not my real mom." And then two seconds later he's like, "OK, maybe you have some food."
And since I've had a few requests for sword pictures, here's a bumch of pics of the last sword my friend Paul and I did together. Hard to believe it started out as black sand from a lakeshore. (click for larger pics):
Also, I wanted to mention that my buddy Brennin's new CD is now available. Jeff Juliano (John Mayer, Lifehouse, Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz) even offered to mix it after he heard the rough cuts. It's good stuff.
You can listen to it (and buy it, if you're so inclined) here.
That's it for now, I'll be back this weekend with something funny.
My life is distinctly lacking in the sword department. This is something I should remedy.
ReplyDeleteI want a samurai sword!!
ReplyDeleteThat sword looks awesome, mad. Truly a piece of art.
ReplyDeleteGreat pix of the nestlings ~ and that sword is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWow JV, you better keep that sword forever. I know a piece of Paul's soul still rests deep inside that work of art. That is beautiful. And props on the woodwork. That color goes amazing with the sword. Can't wait till the weekend though!

That is a fine peace of steel.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful sword. Baby birds. Good music. Nice. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI know what to get B for Christmas now...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful swords! And the wood stand is gorgeous too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sara. I made that too....
ReplyDeleteThat is one beautiful piece of craftsmanship.
ReplyDeleteLong time lurker, first time poster.
ReplyDeleteLove the baby bird pics! Those swords are so awesome. The detail is amazing. Beautiful job - and so nice to have such a wonderful reminder of Paul.
Love your writing and sense of humor. Some of my favorite posts are the ones you write of your mother.
I meant to comment on this a while ago and didn't get a chance. The sword is beautiful. I studied Japanese sword for two years until I had to move 230 miles away from the only dojo I could take it in; I still miss it. The first bamboo target I sliced sits on a shelf behind me as I type. Having a sword like that in your hands, and a teacher to show you how to use it, is a joy. Having the ability to MAKE those is a God-gift.
ReplyDeleteJohnny,
ReplyDeleteSo weird to be asking this, but by any chance did your friend Paul ever give an interview to a TV crew about sword manufacturing? I thought for sure I saw him on a Military Chanel production over the weekend detailing the history of the sword
Hi David -- Yes, he was in a few of those types of things. He was actually a pretty big fish in a very obscure pond. He was in an episode of Modern Marvels too, and heavily involved in a documentary that came out right after his death called "Reclaiming the Blade." Very cool stuff.
ReplyDeleteIt may have been Reclaiming the Sword that I'm thinking about. All I can remember thinking was, "Damn I know that guy from somewhere..."
