  2. Wow. That's really cool, and a little eerie. When they coalesce, they remind me of the smoke monster.

I think something about this phenomenon was airing on Discovery or some channel way up in the 100's. It's a pretty amazing thing, and this video really makes it even cooler.

    Peace <3

  6. I meant to say (and forgot) that it's called a murmuration. Very rare. Very cool.

I love when birds do this, but I've never seen it on such a grand scale. Thanks so much for posting this!

  11. Sorry, sorry, I can't be the only one to find this scary, right? Nobody else was scarred by the movie Birds? No?

I'll go hide my head and think of ponies or something now.

  12. I once watched a flock of birds maybe 1/4 the size of this one do this sort of thing and it was so cool I stopped in the middle of my day and watched it for about 20-30 min but with a flock of birds this size it's way more amazing.

  13. That is amazingly beautiful! I wonder WHY the starlings do that?

I must confess to also wondering if all those birdies left any little presents on the heads of the watchers... :-)

I'm guessing that it's a result of their flocking habits.

They're like schools of fish in that everybody follow everybody.

Since there's no leader, the murmuration (and many schools) travel in a random manner.

Since everybody is following, the direction passes through the murmuration like a wave as everybody responds to everybody.
